When my 45 year old mother told me she had decided to buy a motorcycle,
I was horrified. My brother and I were concerned that she had lost her
mind and forgotten that she was a mother and a grandmother. But we bit
our tongues and waited for the worst. What I learned was much the
opposite. My mom loved it and seemed to find a great deal of
independence and freedom in it. The more confidant she became on the
bike, the more confidant she became in life. The greatest thing my
mom's motorcycle taught me came about six months after she bought
the bike, she wrecked. Took a corner too quick and slid off the road
into a sign. The bike was a wreck and so was she. The township she was
riding in billed her for the sign and the bike was in major need of
repair. But she had it completely repaired. After weeks of repairs and
a large amount of money, she got on it again and rode. That was the
last time she rode, she said she just didn't find it fun anymore. But
she did it, she got back on it and we were proud of her.
The truth is women are becoming a large force in the area of
motorcycling everywhere adding up to about nine percent of all
motorcycle drivers in the United States. Although nine percent may not
seem like a lot, it is when it was nearly non-existent twenty years ago.
There has become a huge amount of women only clubs like Women on
Wheels, Spokes-Women Motorcycle Club, and Women in the Wind all over the
country and beyond. Not only are they riding, they are making a
difference with their riding. Charitable work has become or always has
been the focus of many of these groups, including fund raising for many
women's issues such as breast cancer, domestic violence, and sexual
assault victims.
Many groups offer seminars on riding, caring and repairs for your bike,
and how to make the most out of a road trip. In addition to the help
they provide for women's causes and the joy of riding itself, they
offer friendship, support, and a source of freedom for women who have
always dreamed of riding. Women can find a sense of independence and
camaraderie in the same activity with a motorcycle.
You can easily find most groups on Internet sites that offer calendars
of events, specifics about members, information regarding membership,
and carious chapters that have been established. So check it out to
satisfy a little curiosity or to get ready to ride with your new found
sisters!
